Spiritual Formation & Moral Psychology
Rabbi Mordecai Finley, Ph.D
Wednesdays
February 3 – February 24
(4 Sessions)
12:00–1:30 pm
'Spiritual Formation and Moral Psychology' has to do with the shaping of the inner life for spiritual, moral, and emotional growth. In class, we learn to identify the processes of our thoughts, emotions, feelings, images, drives, impulses, and so forth, that create our state of mind, and therefore our behaviors. We learn how to look at the "ego mind", but not to identify with it. The focus on spiritual psychology helps us create a contemplative practice, where we can better understand our inner processes with an eye toward transformation and moral growth. Each month we focus on a few different themes. For February, we will study the Chasidic background of spiritual formation and moral psychology growth.

January 20 – March 10, 2010
(8 Sessions)
8:00–9:30 pm
This class will focus on texts of the Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism, using selections from the Bible and the Pseudepigrapha (a strange collection of amazing texts written
between the Biblical and Talmudic periods), texts that form a unique akind of Jewish mysticism that preceeded the Kabbalah.
We will also study passages from Sefer Yetzirah (The Book of Formation), a brief but powerful book that has shapped
Jewish mysticism since its appearance in mystical circles sometime in the first century C.E.
The Talmud and Midrash also contain, here and there, stories and teaching of profound mystical significance.
Time permitting, we will look at other Kabbalistic texts: the work of Rabbi Moshe Cordovero, and Isaac Luria.
This course is open to beginners, although it is geared for those with some experience studying the Kabbalah.
